As the scorching summer intensifies, Chennai residents are stepping up to ensure birds don’t go thirsty. With rising temperatures and shrinking water sources, people across the city are placing water bowls on terraces, balconies, and gardens to help birds stay hydrated.“Birds struggle to find water during summer, especially in urban areas where natural sources dry up,” says Priya Ramesh, an environmental activist. “A simple bowl of water can save their lives.”
Many animal welfare groups have also launched awareness campaigns urging people to take small yet meaningful actions. “Placing a mud or earthen bowl with fresh water in a shaded area can make a big difference,” suggests Dr. Ravi Kumar, a veterinarian. “Birds like crows, sparrows, and mynas often depend on such water sources.”
To encourage more participation, NGOs and civic groups are distributing free water bowls. Some apartment communities have also taken collective steps to set up designated water stations for birds. “We placed multiple bowls in our apartment complex, and it’s wonderful to see different species coming in for water,” says Shruthi, a resident of Adyar.
Beyond providing water, experts also suggest adding small grains or bird feed to help sustain them. “Dehydration and lack of food can be fatal for birds in summer,” warns Dr. Kumar. “A little care from humans can go a long way in protecting urban wildlife.”
Even school children are getting involved in the initiative. Some schools in Chennai have started encouraging students to set up water bowls at home and share their experiences. “It’s heartwarming to see kids excited about helping birds,” says Rajeshwari, a school teacher in T. Nagar. “These small acts of kindness instill compassion and environmental awareness at a young age.”
With Chennai’s summer set to peak in the coming weeks, residents hope more people will join this simple yet life-saving initiative, ensuring that birds find relief from the relentless heat.
