Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, L. Murugan, has accused the Tamil Nadu government of neglecting the grievances of sanitation workers while having time for other activities. The Minister’s comments were made after the arrest of protesting sanitation workers at the Greater Chennai Corporation headquarters.
Speaking to reporters after flagging off the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ rally at the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital, Murugan alleged that the workers, who were protesting peacefully, were “brutally arrested” and that the state government failed to grant them a hearing. He further pointed out that the involvement of private companies in conservancy work in Tamil Nadu began during the previous Congress-DMK coalition government.
Murugan also took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, dismissing his allegations of “vote chori” as baseless.
On the topic of development, the Minister credited central government schemes and funding for Tamil Nadu’s progress. While acknowledging the state’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth of 11.19%, he claimed that it still lagged behind states like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
Highlighting various infrastructure projects, Murugan listed the expansion of airports in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, and Thoothukudi; the extension of the metro rail to North Chennai; and the proposed double-decker flyover from Maduravoyal to Chennai Port. He stated that these projects were part of the Prime Minister’s vision for a developed India by 2047. The rally, which was attended by over 500 BJP workers, proceeded from Stanley Medical College to GA Junction in Old Washermenpet.
