Chennai’s iconic Rajeshwari Cinema in Vadapalani, which entertained movie lovers for over five decades, has begun demolition work, evoking nostalgia and sadness among locals. For nearly 50 years, Rajeshwari Cinema was a landmark in Vadapalani, known for offering an affordable movie experience to thousands of Chennai residents. Even with the rise of multiplexes and modern theatres, the cinema maintained ticket prices between ₹40 and ₹60, making it a beloved destination for families and the common man. “Rajeshwari Cinema was not just a theatre; it was a part of our childhood. We grew up watching Tamil classics here, and it had a charm that multiplexes could never replicate,” said Ramesh Kumar, a longtime Vadapalani resident. The theatre operated until the Covid-19 pandemic, after which screenings were halted. Known for its simple yet memorable movie-going experience, it holds a special place in the hearts of generations who came here to watch films with family and friends. “It’s heartbreaking to see it go. This cinema was a cultural hub, and its demolition marks the end of an era in Chennai’s cinema history,” added Priya B., a frequent visitor and local film enthusiast. With the demolition now underway, the closure of Rajeshwari Cinema is a poignant reminder of changing times, urban development, and the fading legacy of single-screen theatres in Chennai.
