Chennai and surrounding districts in Tamil Nadu are bracing for intense rainfall over the next three days as Cyclone Montha continues to strengthen over the Bay of Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the developing cyclone, named ‘Montha’ by Thailand, is likely to bring persistent heavy showers and possible flooding to Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, and Villupuram districts.
The IMD has issued a special orange alert for Tiruvallur and Ranipet, forecasting especially heavy rainfall on the second and third days of the warning period.
With the Northeast monsoon already active across Tamil Nadu, authorities have advised residents to take precautions and limit non-essential travel.
Precautionary measures are being taken by local government agencies, including declaring school holidays in affected areas and keeping emergency response teams on standby. The public is urged to follow official weather updates and remain indoors during heavy downpours to stay safe.
As the weather system intensifies and approaches the coast, further advisories and updates will be issued to keep citizens informed.
Residents of Chennai and nearby districts should prepare for likely disruptions and heed warnings for their safety.
