Contingency plan must

The IndiGo flight cancellation crisis of December 2025 exposed glaring vulnerabilities in India’s aviation sector, with over 4,500 flights scrapped in a week, stranding nearly six lakh passengers amid crew shortages, new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules, technical glitches, and weather woes. IndiGo’s failure to adapt its rostering and planning systems triggered a domino effect, peaking at 1,600 cancellations on December 5 alone, despite DGCA granting temporary exemptions on night duties and rest norms. Passengers endured chaos at major airports like Delhi and Bengaluru, with refunds totaling Rs 610 crore processed but baggage delivery lagging in many cases.

To avert future debacles, airlines must prioritize robust contingency planning, including real-time crew monitoring software, diversified rostering buffers, and stress-testing for regulatory shifts like FDTL Phase II, which extended pilot rest to 48 hours and capped night flights. Travelers can mitigate risks by opting for flexible tickets, tracking airline on-time performance via DGCA portals, booking with smaller carriers during peak seasons, or securing travel insurance covering cancellations—steps that empower proactive choices over reactive suffering.
IndiGo’s own “network reboot” on December 5, slashing flights temporarily to reposition assets, underscores how preemptive cuts can stabilize operations faster than last-minute scrambles.
