Veteran Malayalam actor, screenwriter and filmmaker Sreenivasan passed away on Saturday at the age of 69 in Ernakulam due to age-related ailments, marking the end of an era for Malayalam cinema. Known for his sharp wit, powerful satire and socially rooted storytelling, Sreenivasan’s career spanned more than four decades. Sreenivasan made his debut in the late 1970s and went on to act in over 200 films, winning widespread admiration for his natural humour and relatable characters. Beyond acting, he emerged as one of Malayalam cinema’s finest scriptwriters, crafting iconic films that reflected society with humour and honesty. Among his most celebrated works are Sandesam, Nadodikkattu, Boeing Boeing, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu, Varavelppu and Udayananu Tharam. His long-standing collaborations with directors Priyadarshan and Sathyan Anthikad, along with legendary actors Mohanlal and Mammootty, produced some of Malayalam cinema’s most memorable films. As a filmmaker, Sreenivasan’s directorial debut Thakarachenda won a National Award, adding to his list of honours which included multiple Kerala State Film Awards, including a Special Jury Mention. In recent years, health complications kept him largely away from the industry. His last appearance was in a delayed release earlier this year, while his final script was for the film Nancy Rani. Sreenivasan is survived by his sons Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, both well-known names in Malayalam cinema as actors, directors and producers. Tributes poured in from across the film fraternity and fans, celebrating his unmatched contribution to Malayalam cinema’s humour, politics, satire and soul. With his passing, Malayalam cinema loses a master storyteller whose legacy will continue to inspire generations. @@@@
