The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chennai, has announced that Tamil Nadu has recorded 3% below normal rainfall during the ongoing Northeast Monsoon season, which is set to conclude by the end of December. The Northeast Monsoon, which spans from October to December, has brought widespread rainfall across several districts. However, the cumulative rainfall remains marginally lower than the seasonal average.
According to IMD data, Tamil Nadu’s normal monsoon rainfall is 440 mm, while the actual rainfall received so far is 427 mm, reflecting a 3% deficit.
In Chennai, the impact has been more pronounced. The city recorded 725 mm of rainfall against the normal of 807 mm, marking a 10% shortfall for the season.
Despite the deficit, officials said the rainfall distribution was largely uniform across many regions, helping sustain water levels in reservoirs and water bodies.
