The construction of a state-of-the-art bus terminal in Mamallapuram, being built at an estimated cost of ₹90.50 crore, is progressing at a rapid pace and is expected to be completed by July, according to officials of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).Mamallapuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site and major international tourist destination, has for decades struggled with severe traffic congestion due to the absence of a permanent bus stand. Currently, buses operate from a temporary facility with limited capacity, often leading to roadblocks and inconvenience for tourists, local residents, and daily commuters.
To resolve the long-standing issue, the Tamil Nadu government initiated the construction of the modern bus terminal on approximately 6.79 acres of land near the East Coast Road (ECR). Although the project had remained on paper for several years, it gained momentum after the foundation stone was laid in February 2024, with construction work commencing the following month.
Officials said that while the northeast monsoon caused minor delays, work is now proceeding at full speed, with labourers and engineers working round the clock to adhere to the deadline. The upcoming terminal is expected to decongest key roads, streamline bus operations, and significantly enhance travel convenience.
Once completed, the new facility will not only improve public transport infrastructure but also offer smoother connectivity for tourists visiting Mamallapuram, thereby boosting the overall travel experience in the heritage town.
