In a major push to expand affordable housing in the city, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday inaugurated 776 newly constructed apartment units under the North Chennai Development Scheme, providing modern living spaces for urban residents and those previously living in vulnerable conditions.The project, developed near Government Stanley Medical College Hospital at Seven Wells, was completed at a cost of Rs. 147 crore and forms part of the state government’s broader effort to improve living standards and rehabilitate families from roadside and canal bank settlements in areas such as Mannadi, Muthialpet, Broadway and Valluvar Kottam Road.
Each of the 776 units — housed in two multi-storey blocks — features essential facilities including a living hall, bedroom, kitchen, toilet and bathroom. The residential complex also includes a range of community amenities aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents:
An anganwadi centre for early childhood care, An urban health and wellness centre, Fair price shops, A Chief Minister’s Study Centre and library, Separate gym facilities for men and women, Children’s play areas and landscaped open spaces
Forty of the units have been specifically earmarked for persons with disabilities, reflecting an inclusive approach in the project’s design.
At the event, Chief Minister Stalin also laid the foundation stone for 144 additional flats at Water Tank Street, Valluvar Kottam Road, with an estimated investment of Rs. 31 crore, marking the next phase of housing development in the region.
The newly inaugurated homes are part of a concerted effort by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) to integrate thousands of families into safe, permanent housing. Officials emphasized that the North Chennai Development Scheme aims not only to provide shelter but also to promote community welfare through education, health and recreational facilities.
