The long-awaited Madhya Kailash flyover is set to be opened to traffic in the first week of February, with nearly 95 per cent of the construction work completed, officials said.
The L-shaped flyover, a key infrastructure project in the city, connects Sardar Patel Road with Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) and is expected to significantly ease congestion at the busy Madhya Kailash junction, one of Chennai’s most traffic-prone intersections.
Once opened, the flyover will enable seamless vehicular movement from Anna Salai to OMR, reducing travel time for commuters heading towards IT corridors and southern parts of the city. Authorities expect the new link to divert a substantial volume of traffic away from the junction below, improving overall traffic flow in the area.
With the commissioning of the flyover, major traffic diversions and pattern changes are expected at Madhya Kailash and surrounding stretches. Traffic police are likely to issue detailed advisories closer to the opening date to ensure a smooth transition and avoid congestion during the initial days of operation.
Officials said finishing works, including road surfacing, signage, lighting and safety installations, are currently underway and are expected to be completed shortly.
The Madhya Kailash flyover is seen as a crucial addition to Chennai’s road infrastructure, particularly for daily commuters to OMR, Adyar and Guindy.
Motorists have been advised to stay alert for official traffic announcements and follow revised routes once the flyover is opened to the public.
