Twenty-five fishermen from Karaikal were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), triggering fresh tension along the Palk Strait.
According to reports, the fishermen were apprehended while fishing near the Kankesanthurai region. Two Sri Lankan naval patrol vessels intercepted the boats and detained the crew. The fishermen, along with their mechanised boats, were taken to a naval camp for inquiry.
Officials said they are likely to be produced before fisheries authorities in Jaffna for further legal proceedings.
The incident has sparked concern among fishing communities in Karaikal and neighbouring coastal districts. Family members of the detained fishermen have appealed to the Union Government and the Government of Puducherry to intervene and secure their early release.
Frequent arrests of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities over alleged boundary violations remain a recurring issue in the Palk Strait, affecting the livelihood of hundreds of coastal families. Political leaders in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have repeatedly urged the Centre to find a permanent diplomatic solution to the long-pending dispute.
Efforts are expected to be initiated through diplomatic channels to ensure the safe return of the detained fishermen at the earliest.
