In a major relief for air travellers, the Union government has proposed a rule mandating airlines to keep up to 60% of seats free under certain booking conditions, aimed at improving flexibility and consumer protection.
The move is part of efforts by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to make air travel more passenger-friendly, especially amid rising complaints over cancellations and high charges.
Under the proposed guidelines, airlines may be required to offer a window where passengers can cancel or modify bookings without heavy penalties, ensuring greater convenience for flyers.
The initiative is expected to benefit frequent travellers and those booking tickets in advance, as it would reduce financial risks associated with last-minute changes.
Officials said the policy is still in the draft stage and may undergo further revisions before implementation. If finalised, it could mark a significant shift in India’s aviation sector towards more customer-centric practices.
