In a political blow to Nilambur MLA P.V. Anvar, Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin has reportedly declined to grant an audience to the independent legislator, who was seeking to join the DMK’s Kerala unit. The move is seen as an attempt by Stalin to avoid tensions with the DMK’s key allies—the CPI(M), which leads the LDF in Kerala, and the Congress, from which Anvar had initially started his political career.
Anvar, who has been at the center of a political storm in Kerala, allegedly approached the DMK leadership through the party’s Kerala in-charge, Murugesan. He sought to transition into the Dravidian party after distancing himself from the Congress and causing friction within the CPI(M). However, DMK sources have confirmed that Stalin rejected Anvar’s request for a meeting, signaling the DMK’s reluctance to engage with the rebel leader.
Anvar, currently an independent MLA representing Nilambur, created waves in Kerala by accusing Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M.R. Ajithkumar, with alleged backing from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his political secretary K. Sasi, of diverting a portion of gold seized during police operations targeting smuggling.
Anvar’s political trajectory has been turbulent. Originally a Congress functionary, he quit the party and became a two-time MLA with the support of the ruling CPI(M). His recent allegations against Pinarayi Vijayan, however, have soured relations with the Left leadership, leading him to explore alternatives in regional politics, including a possible shift to the DMK.
Sources within the DMK revealed that while Anvar had initiated contact through Kerala Murugesan, the DMK leadership outrightly rejected the possibility of him joining the party. “He quit Congress and then turned against the Marxists who helped him get elected twice.
