The tragic murder of a government school teacher, Ramani, in Mallipattinam village, Thanjavur district, has prompted strong reactions from across Tamil Nadu. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has condemned the incident, asserting that violence against teachers will not be tolerated.
“Strict action will be taken against the accused. Violence against teachers is unacceptable in any form,” the Minister said while addressing the media before leaving for Thanjavur. He also announced a holiday for the school and assured that counselling services would be provided to students who might have been traumatized by the incident.
Teachers’ Associations Speak Out
The incident has sparked outrage among educators, with several teachers’ associations condemning the murder and demanding enhanced safety measures.
The State Seniority Teachers’ Association (SSTA) has announced that teachers across Tamil Nadu will wear black armbands on Thursday as a mark of protest. The association has also renewed its demand for the immediate implementation of a Teachers’ Work Safety Act.
In a statement, the Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers’ Welfare Association said, “The fact that a criminal believes he can walk into a school and kill a teacher, even for personal reasons, highlights the unsafe environment in schools. This heinous act reveals the vulnerabilities teachers face in their workplaces.”
The association further urged the state government to introduce a comprehensive work safety law for teachers and ensure the harshest punishment for the accused. “We have been demanding a safety law for teachers for years, but successive governments have ignored our pleas. It is high time the government acts swiftly to address this issue,” the statement added.
The incident has reignited debates about workplace safety for educators and students in Tamil Nadu. Teachers have stressed the need for urgent reforms to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi assured that the state government would take all necessary measures to improve safety on school campuses and ensure justice for the victim.
