In a bid to modernize public communication and boost revenue, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will install 100 new Variable Messaging Display (VMD) boards across the city. These will be set up in prominent locations such as parks, playgrounds, beaches, and public buildings. Each display board is expected to generate around ₹1 lakh per month, bringing in an estimated ₹12 crore annually for the Corporation. Operated under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the boards will function 15 hours a day — with 2 hours reserved for government messages and 13 hours for private advertisements.
The new digital boards will be integrated with the city’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for centralized monitoring and real-time updates. A System Integrator will oversee the connectivity, maintenance, and installation process.
This move is part of Chennai’s ongoing smart city initiatives, which also include digital name boards and smart parking systems aimed at improving urban infrastructure and civic services.
