Keelur Kokkaladha Government High School near Ooty sets an inspiring example by offering financial incentives to boost student enrolment In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Tamil Nadu, a government high school in the Nilgiris district has come up with a remarkable strategy to revive student strength ā by offering a cash deposit of up to ā¹5000 in the bank accounts of newly enrolled students. The Keelur Kokkaladha Government High School, located near the hill town of Ooty, had earlier faced closure due to a drastic fall in enrolment. However, the collective efforts of its dedicated teachers, former students, and the local community have not only brought the school back to life but also sparked a renewed sense of purpose and pride. To attract fresh admissions for the academic year, a plan was devised to incentivize enrolment financially. According to the scheme, students joining classes 1 to 6 will receive ā¹5000 deposited directly into their bank accounts. For those enrolling in classes 7, 8, and 9, the respective amounts will be ā¹4000, ā¹3000, and ā¹2000. These funds will be accessible as a maturity deposit once the student successfully completes Class 10. Pamphlets explaining the scheme have been distributed widely in nearby villages. As schools reopened in Tamil Nadu, teachers ā including the schoolās physical education instructor ā embarked on a door-to-door awareness campaign across surrounding areas such as Samraj, Kaikatti, and Melur.

Their outreach efforts have been well-received by parents, many of whom are now considering sending their children to the school.
Currently home to 42 students, Keelur Government High School is a shining example of how grassroots efforts and community involvement can breathe new life into struggling institutions. In a time when the state government is actively working to enhance enrolment in public schools, the bold and creative approach by this Nilgiris school has earned praise and could serve as a model for similar efforts across the state.
