Sourav Ganguly open to coaching Indian team

New Delhi, June23: Former India captain and ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has made it clear that he has no plans to enter politics, but remains open to the idea of coaching the Indian cricket team in the future. The 52-year-old, who turns 53 this July, spoke candidly in a podcast interview, reflecting on his journey in cricket administration, his coaching prospects, and his views on current head coach Gautam Gambhir.

“I never really thought about it because I got into different roles,” said Ganguly when asked if he ever considered coaching the national team. “I finished (competitive) cricket in 2013 and then became BCCI President,” he said, highlighting that his focus during his administrative tenure was to elevate Indian cricket in multiple ways, particularly in promoting women’s cricket.

Ganguly served as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President from 2019 to 2022 and was instrumental in ushering in reforms and boosting domestic infrastructure. He also emphasized women’s cricket development during his term, which he described as one of his most meaningful contributions to the sport in India.

On the question of whether he might take on the role of Team India’s head coach someday, Ganguly remained non-committal but did not rule it out. “We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 50—well, almost 53—so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it. We’ll see where it goes,” he said, leaving the door ajar for a potential coaching stint.

Between 2018 and 2024, Ganguly was associated with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, serving as their Team Director in two separate terms. His involvement with the franchise showcased his keen eye for talent and strategic input in a shorter format of the game.

Turning his attention to the present coaching setup, Ganguly had high praise for Gautam Gambhir, who took charge of the Indian team after the World Cup. “Gautam is doing a good job,” said Ganguly. “He started off a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand, but he picked up with the Champions Trophy. That was a big win in Dubai.”

India’s recent Champions Trophy triumph under Gambhir’s guidance seems to have impressed Ganguly, who credited the former opener’s ability to adapt and evolve in his role. “This is going to be a big series against England,” he added, referring to the upcoming high-stakes contest.

When asked about Gambhir’s tactical acumen, Ganguly was complimentary. “Gautam is passionate. He speaks his mind and is clear with his plans. That honesty and straightforwardness can make a big difference in team management,” he observed.

With his sharp cricketing brain, rich leadership legacy, and deep involvement in the sport even after retirement, Ganguly continues to be a revered figure in Indian cricket. While politics is off the table, fans and experts alike will be watching closely to see if ‘Dada’ takes on the coach’s mantle in the future.
