Once known for its deep-rooted love for traditional South Indian food, Chennai is now embracing a global food wave. From Korean bibimbap to Japanese sushi, Mexican tacos to Mediterranean platters, international cuisines are gaining massive popularity among the city’s food lovers.
Trendy cafes, fusion restaurants, and street food joints are popping up across the city, catering to an ever-growing crowd eager to explore global flavours. Many restaurants now offer curated menus featuring Thai, Italian, Korean, Lebanese, Vietnamese, and even South American dishes.
“The city’s palate has definitely evolved,” says Chef Sanjana Krishnan, owner of a pan-Asian bistro in Anna Nagar. “Ten years ago, sushi was a rare find. Today, I have teenagers asking for kimchi and ramen!”
Food delivery apps also report a significant rise in orders for international dishes. According to a spokesperson from a popular delivery service, “Orders for Italian, Korean, and Mexican dishes have doubled in the last year alone.”
Young professionals, students, and even families are now open to experimenting with global flavours. Raghav Chandrasekar, a marketing executive, shares, “We grew up eating idli and sambar. But now, I regularly go out with friends to try shawarma, Thai curries, or Japanese rice bowls. It’s exciting to explore new tastes.”
Social media has played a key role in this culinary shift. Instagram reels, YouTube vlogs, and food blogs have introduced people to global food trends, encouraging them to try international cuisines locally.
“It’s more than just food. It’s an experience,” says Meera Suresh, a food blogger. “People are curious, they want to eat what they see online. Restaurants in Chennai have stepped up and are offering authentic and fusion dishes with a local twist.”
Several hotels and fine-dining spots have also begun hosting international food festivals, inviting chefs from abroad to showcase authentic cuisines.
As Chennai opens its arms to the world’s culinary delights, the city’s food scene is becoming more diverse, adventurous, and cosmopolitan than ever before.
