Navarathri has begun, and this year, households across Chennai are embracing Kolu with a fresh, eco-conscious twist, seamlessly blending age-old tradition with modern sustainability.
Traditionally, Kolu displays feature elegantly arranged steps adorned with dolls, clay figurines, and decorative items. However, the use of plastic and non-biodegradable materials has long raised environmental concerns. This festive season, many families are turning to natural, sustainable materials such as clay, terracotta, wood, and paper, reducing plastic and disposable decorations without compromising on the festive charm.
“Eco-friendly Kolu does not mean giving up tradition,” says Priya Ramaswamy, a Chennai resident and Kolu enthusiast. “We are using clay and wooden dolls, natural colors, and even home-made decorations. It feels more authentic, and children are learning about sustainability while celebrating culture.”
Local cultural organizations and schools have championed eco-conscious practices, encouraging participants to reuse old dolls, avoid glitter or synthetic materials, and create miniature gardens with live plants instead of artificial flowers. Anil Kumar, coordinator of a Chennai-based cultural forum, explains, “We want people to enjoy the festival without harming the environment. Kolu can be beautiful and meaningful without plastic or wasteful materials.”
Some inventive households have introduced DIY Kolu steps crafted from recycled cardboard, with imaginative themes highlighting social messages or environmental awareness.
The initiative resonates with a broader movement across Tamil Nadu to encourage sustainable festival practices. Temple authorities have also joined in, urging devotees to use biodegradable materials for festive arrangements.
“Navaratri is about devotion and creativity,” notes Dr. Meena Subramanian, a cultural historian. “Celebrating responsibly by reducing waste enhances the spirit of the festival and sets a meaningful example for the next generation.”
This Navarathri, Chennai is not just illuminating homes with vibrant Kolu displays — it’s illuminating the path toward a celebration that honors tradition while caring for the environment.
