Chennai is witnessing increasing traffic congestion in its major market hubs, particularly in West Mambalam, Koyambedu, Nanganallur, and Parry’s Corner, as a lack of adequate parking facilities leads to roadblocks, especially during the ongoing festive season.
Shoppers and vendors alike are facing daily challenges due to the limited parking spaces. “During weekends and festive days, it takes me almost 30 minutes just to find a parking spot near the market. By the time I park, the streets are already jammed,” said Ravi Kumar, a resident of West Mambalam.
Local shop owners expressed concerns over business losses caused by the congestion. “Customers often leave without buying anything because they can’t find a place to park. It is affecting our sales significantly,” said Meena Iyer, a textile shop owner in Parry’s Corner.
Traffic police confirmed that narrow roads and encroachment in these busy market areas worsen the problem. Inspector Ramesh of the Chennai Traffic Police noted, “We try to manage the flow, but during peak shopping hours, vehicles park on both sides of the road, causing bottlenecks. Temporary traffic diversions help but are not enough.”
Residents of Nanganallur also highlighted that during festive seasons, delivery trucks and private vehicles compete for the same limited space. “The problem is not just for shoppers but also for essential goods deliveries. Streets remain blocked for hours,” said S. Aravind, a local resident.
Experts suggest multi-level parking and better regulation of roadside parking as long-term solutions. “The city must adopt modern parking management strategies, including digital parking apps, multi-level parking lots near markets, and strict enforcement against illegal parking,” said urban planner Dr. Lakshmi Rajan.
With festivals bringing crowds and increased commercial activity, authorities are urged to implement solutions quickly to ease the traffic strain in Chennai’s busiest market areas.
