Heavy traffic congestion was reported in Perungalathur and nearby areas on Monday morning as people returned to Chennai after the long weekend holidays.
With schools and offices reopening, the GST Road witnessed long queues of vehicles moving slowly.
Cars, vans, buses, and two-wheelers crowded the highway, leading to a traffic jam that extended for several kilometres. The situation worsened due to water stagnation on parts of the road following overnight rain. Vehicles moved at a snailâs pace, and commuters faced long delays.
Tambaram railway station also saw a huge rush of passengers, with suburban trains towards Chennai packed beyond capacity. Many office-goers and students were affected due to the traffic snarls and train crowding.
Traffic police were deployed in large numbers to manage the situation and ease the flow of vehicles. Officials advised motorists to plan their travel early and use alternate routes wherever possible.
