Chennai, April 4:
The Union Government has asserted that punishment in the sensational Sathankulam Custodial Deaths Case must be awarded “without discrimination,” reinforcing the principle that justice should remain impartial and uniform.
The submission was made during the sentencing phase of the case, which pertains to the custodial deaths of a father-son duo in 2020 that had sparked widespread outrage across the country. The case, investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, led to the conviction of multiple police personnel after a prolonged trial.
According to reports, the Centre emphasized that the rule of law mandates equal treatment for all, irrespective of the status of the accused. The observation comes at a crucial juncture, as the court is weighing arguments on the quantum of punishment, with the prosecution pressing for stringent action citing the gravity of the offence.
The case has been widely seen as a test of accountability in instances of custodial violence. Legal experts note that the Centre’s stand underscores the constitutional guarantee of equality before law, while also sending a strong signal on the need for deterrence against abuse of power by law enforcement authorities.
The court is expected to pronounce its decision on sentencing shortly, a verdict that is likely to have far-reaching implications for policing standards and human rights enforcement in the country.
