Chennai, Apr 18:
Construction work on the Koyambedu–Chennai Trade Centre stretch of Chennai Metro Rail Limited’s Phase II project has slowed due to a shortage of labour, raising concerns over meeting the June deadline.
The 12-km corridor, part of Corridor 5 (Red Line), is in its final stages with overall progress at around 75%. However, finishing works—particularly station entry and exit points—have been delayed as they require intensive manpower.
Officials said the workforce has dropped sharply, with only around 400 workers currently available against the required 800.
The shortage is largely attributed to migrant workers returning to eastern India for the West Bengal Assembly elections, a recurring issue that affects infrastructure projects across the country. Workforce levels are expected to stabilise by mid-May.
The slowdown has impacted eight stations, including Koyambedu, Virugambakkam, Ramapuram and Chennai Trade Centre. In contrast, work on four double-decker stations is progressing as scheduled due to relatively better labour availability.
Despite delays in finishing works, core construction activities such as viaduct building and track laying remain on track, supported by a stable workforce.
The Koyambedu–Chennai Trade Centre stretch is a crucial link in Chennai Metro’s expansion, aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion across key parts of the city.
