Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived this afternoon at a village in Bengal’s Birbhum where eight people were burnt alive by a mob on Tuesday, an incident that has triggered a massive political backlash.

While she has been accused by the opposition BJP of presiding over a complete collapse of law and order in the State, Mamata said, ‘I never believed something so barbaric can happen in modern Bengal. Mothers and children were killed.’

Alleging a bigger conspiracy, she called for ‘stringent action’ and said the police would investigate the killings ‘from all angles’.
She announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each family of the deceased, and Rs 2 lakh for each family to rebuild houses. She also announced to provide one job each for the families of the deceased.

Mamata Banerjee said that strict action will be taken against the SDPO and OC for negligence. ‘There is a big conspiracy. Police will do impartial investigation. Take stringent actions,’ she said.
