In a spiritual spectacle that captivated lakhs of devotees from various corners of the country and beyond, the ancient Lord Subramaniaswamy Temple in Tiruchendur illuminated with religious fervor during the divine ‘Soorasamharam’ event on a Saturday evening.
The ceremonial procession of the adorned idol of Lord Jayanthinadhar (Murugan) unfolded amidst a sea of devotees, leading from the temple to the adjacent seashore. Here, according to mythological beliefs, Lord Murugan wielded his lance to vanquish the demons Gajamugasuran, Singamugasuran, and Soorapadman, marking the significant moment of ‘Soorasamharam.’
The occasion was not merely a visual spectacle but also a deeply religious one, marked by special poojas and Deeparadhana offered to the presiding deity. The temple corridors were opened for devotees at 1 am, paving the way for the ‘Viswaroopa Dharisanam’ event. Following this, the ‘Udhayamarthanda Abhishekam’ took place at 2:00 hours, and the ‘Uchikaala Abhishekam’ unfolded at 9 am, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere.
The highlight of the event was witnessing the symbolic slaying of demons by Lord Murugan, a powerful and revered deity in Hinduism. After the divine display, devotees participated in a sacred ritual, taking a holy dip in the sea, symbolizing purification and spiritual renewal.
The Soorasamharam event is a significant facet of the auspicious “Skanda Sashti” festival, celebrated on the sixth day. While this enactment occurs in various historic temples dedicated to Lord Murugan across the state during the Tamil month of Karthigai, the event holds special prominence at the Lord Subramania Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur – the second of the six holy abodes of the lord.
