As Tamil Nadu grapples with scorching temperatures and the looming specter of a heat wave, relief appears to be on the horizon as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light to heavy rain across interior districts in the coming days.
While an orange alert for heat wave conditions persists in various parts of Tamil Nadu, the IMD’s forecast offers a glimmer of hope for respite from the oppressive heat. The anticipated convectional rainfall is expected to bring relief from the sweltering temperatures, albeit temporarily, particularly in interior regions of the state.
Despite the prospect of rainfall, the dry weather is forecasted to persist across Tamil Nadu throughout the month, exacerbating concerns over water scarcity and agricultural distress. According to meteorological data, the state has experienced a significant rainfall deficit of 74 percent during the summer season, exacerbating the challenges posed by the ongoing heat wave.
Dr. S Balachandran, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology at the Regional Meteorological Centre, attributed the prevailing heat wave conditions to the impact of El NiƱo. He warned that mercury levels in north interior districts could surge by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, with coastal areas also experiencing heightened temperatures, hovering around 39 to 40 degrees Celsius.
The IMD’s observations indicate the presence of a trough extending from south Chhattisgarh to south Tamil Nadu, influencing weather patterns across the region. As a result, several districts in Tamil Nadu are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm activity and gusty winds during the afternoon hours.
Of particular note is the forecast for heavy rain on May 7, with Nilgiris, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, Tirupathur, and Vellore districts likely to bear the brunt of the downpour. Despite the anticipated showers, meteorologist Balachandran cautioned that the relief offered by sporadic summer rains would be short-lived, with temperatures expected to rise once again in the ensuing days.
