The vibrant and colorful kites of various shapes captured the hearts of many at the four-day International Kite Flying Festival, which concluded yesterday evening at Thiruvidanthai Beach, near Mamallapuram. The event, organized by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department, mesmerized visitors with a dazzling display of creativity in the skies.Kite flying festivals have become an annual tradition in many countries, drawing crowds eager to witness the spectacle. In Tamil Nadu, the Tourism Department first introduced this festival in 2022 at Mamallapuram, and it has quickly become a much-anticipated event.
This year’s festival, held from August 15 to 18, saw participation from over 45 kite-flying enthusiasts and professionals from countries such as Malaysia and Singapore. The skies over Thiruvidanthai Beach were adorned with kites featuring a wide array of designs, including national flags, bears, tigers, octopuses, snakes, Kathakali faces, Superman, dragons, Jallikattu bulls, and images of freedom fighters.
Visitors expressed their delight by capturing the stunning kites on their smartphones and sharing the images across social media platforms. The popularity of the festival was evident, as the final day saw heavy traffic congestion near the event site, a testament to the large turnout.
The International Kite Flying Festival has once again proven to be a major attraction, bringing joy and excitement to both locals and tourists alike, while also showcasing the cultural and artistic diversity of kite flying.
