Heavy rainfall alert for TN as weather system intensifies

A well-marked low-pressure area brewing over the Bay of Bengal has gained momentum and is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu over the next five days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts, forecasting intense rains from today onwards.
According to the weather office, the low-pressure system, initially formed over the East Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal, has moved west-northwestward, becoming a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal. This system is likely to intensify further into a depression over the central parts of the south Bay of Bengal by Monday.
As the system moves northwestward toward the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coasts in the coming days, it is expected to bring heavy rains across the state. The weather department has specifically warned of very heavy rainfall in the Cauvery delta districts, including Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam, for the next three days. Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected in the northern coastal districts, including Chennai and its neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu.
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for Chennai and its surrounding areas, including Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, from November 27 to 29. Villupuram, Cuddalore, and the delta regions are also on high alert due to the impending downpour.
The IMD has advised authorities to be prepared for potential disruptions due to heavy rains, particularly in low-lying areas and districts prone to flooding. Farmers, fishermen, and the general public are urged to exercise caution and stay updated on weather alerts. Coastal areas are also advised to be vigilant, as strong winds and rough seas are expected in the coming days.
This weather system is likely to continue influencing Tamil Nadu’s weather until the end of the week, with the potential for localized flooding in the affected areas. The IMD continues to monitor the system’s progress closely and will provide further updates as necessary.
