Microplastics are no longer just an environmental concern—they have now become a serious health threat, warned Tamil Nadu’s Health Secretary, Supriya Sahu.
A recent study conducted by the University of New Mexico, USA, analyzed the biological samples of 91 individuals between 1997 and 2024. Shockingly, more than 12 of them were found to have microplastic particles in their brains. Additionally, microplastics were detected in their kidneys, liver, blood, sperm, umbilical cord, and even breast milk.
Microplastics are defined as plastic particles smaller than 5mm, often invisible to the naked eye. These tiny particles have spread extensively into the environment, contaminating air, water, and food sources.
Sharing the study on social media, Supriya Sahu raised concerns over the potential link between microplastics and dementia (memory loss disorders). She emphasized that these particles can infiltrate the human brain and negatively impact cognitive functions.
Supriya Sahu’s Statement
“Microplastics have now been found inside the human brain, as confirmed by global research. They are also linked to memory loss disorders such as dementia. These particles are present in everything we consume—our food, water, and air—making it easy for them to enter our bodies.”
Sahu further highlighted that microplastics are not just a threat to the environment but pose a major risk to human health. She urged people to minimize plastic usage and adopt individual responsibility to reduce exposure to these harmful particles.
