The Chennai Sessions Court has refused to transfer notorious gangster P. Nagendran—the key accused in the murder of BSP leader K. Armstrong—to a private hospital for special care. The decision came after the court reviewed a medical report submitted by a team constituted by the dean of Madras Medical College (MMC).Principal Sessions Judge S. Karthikeyan heard the petition filed by Visalakshi, Nagendran’s wife, who alleged that his health was deteriorating and sought his transfer to a private hospital of their choice.
On Thursday, the medical team submitted its report, stating that Nagendran’s health was worsening but did not recommend shifting him to a private facility. Advocate Baalaji, appearing for Nagendran, objected to the report, arguing that Vellore Christian Medical College (CMC), where he is currently admitted, lacks adequate facilities to treat his condition. He insisted that since Nagendran’s health was deteriorating, he should be allowed to receive treatment at a private hospital of his choice.
However, Special Public Prosecutor R. Sreenivasan, representing the police, opposed the plea, stating that a special leave petition (SLP) filed by Nagendran’s wife is still pending before the Supreme Court. He argued that as the matter was sub judice, the sessions court could not make a decision on transferring him to a private hospital.
In response, Advocate Baalaji countered the prosecution’s argument, citing an interim order from the Supreme Court, which allowed the sessions court to hear and decide on the matter.
After considering all submissions, the sessions court denied the request to shift Nagendran to a private hospital, upholding the medical report’s recommendation.
