Starting next month, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will begin microchipping one lakh pet dogs to track owners and prevent abandonment. The initiative aims to ensure responsible pet ownership and improve animal welfare in the city.
The microchips will store essential details, including the owner’s information, vaccination records, and sterilization status. Once the database is created, pet owners will receive vaccination reminders through a dedicated app, making it easier to keep their pets healthy.
Additionally, GCC is considering limiting the number of pet dogs per household, based on available space and neighborhood conditions, to promote responsible pet management.
Microchipping will be mandatory, with fees to be finalized soon. To facilitate the process, camps will be set up across all 200 city divisions, and the service will be available at GCC veterinary clinics, private hospitals, and government veterinary centers.
This move is expected to curb pet abandonment, streamline dog registration, and enhance animal health monitoring across Chennai.
