The State Highways Department is gearing up to start the final leg of the Perungalathur Road Over Bridge (ROB) works, connecting it with the Tambaram Eastern Bypass. With the 33/11 kV substation relocated and Forest Department permissions secured, the department has invited bids for remaining tasks, including the approach road, service road, stormwater drains, and retaining walls on the eastern bypass arm.As part of the project, NH main carriageway at Perungalathur will be widened into eight lanes beneath the ROB. The ROB, which began in 2019, along with a six-armed elliptical rotary flyover on GST Road, faced delays due to land acquisition issues. Originally awarded for ā¹155 crore, the contract was foreclosed in July 2025 after ā¹111.9 crore worth of work was completed.
Despite setbacks, major sections, including Chengalpet-Chennai and Perungalathur arms, have already been completed and opened to traffic. The project was delayed due to the 0.95-hectare forest land diversion approval and substation relocation, which TANGEDCO completed after receiving ā¹19.53 crore from the Highways Department. With these hurdles cleared, the project is now on track for completion.
