As Chennai’s summer temperatures soar, ensuring your two-wheeler is in optimal condition becomes crucial for smooth and safe rides. With the mercury often reaching over 40°C, maintaining your bike or scooter can prevent breakdowns and ensure a hassle-free experience on the roads. Experts and mechanics from across the city share their top tips for keeping two-wheelers in good shape during the intense summer months.
“High temperatures can put a lot of stress on a two-wheeler’s engine and electrical components,” says Ravi Kumar, a senior mechanic in Chennai. “The most common issue we face during peak summer is overheating. It’s important to regularly check the coolant levels and ensure that the radiator is working efficiently. If your bike uses air cooling, check the air filter and make sure it is clean and free from dust.”
Another critical area to focus on is tire maintenance. “The heat can cause tires to lose pressure quickly, so it’s essential to monitor their air levels regularly,” advises Aravind Raj, a tire specialist. “Low tire pressure leads to uneven wear and reduced fuel efficiency, which can become dangerous at high speeds.”
Battery care is also essential in the scorching Chennai heat. “Battery fluid tends to evaporate in extreme temperatures, and this can lead to reduced performance or even a failure,” explains Ramesh, an auto-electrician. “Ensure the battery terminals are clean and that the fluid levels are topped up, especially before embarking on longer rides.”
Fuel efficiency tends to drop in summer, primarily due to the evaporation of fuel and engine strain. “I always advise my customers to avoid running their bikes on low fuel during the summer. This can cause more strain on the fuel pump,” says Sanjay, a mechanic in the city. “Also, using higher-quality fuel can help prevent the buildup of sludge and ensure better engine performance.”
Regular cleaning is another key maintenance step, as dust and dirt can accumulate quickly in the dry, hot climate. “Washing your two-wheeler not only keeps it looking good but also prevents dirt from affecting the performance of various parts like the brakes,” advises Meena, a vehicle care professional.
Ultimately, while riding in Chennai’s summer heat can be challenging, regular maintenance can help mitigate many of the issues that arise. Keeping your two-wheeler in top condition ensures not only its longevity but also your safety on the road. As mechanic Ravi Kumar aptly puts it, “A well-maintained bike is the best way to beat the Chennai heat and keep your journeys smooth and safe.”
