In an impressive turn of events, the number of students enrolling in Chennai’s corporation schools has seen a remarkable rise in 2025. After witnessing 6,000 enrollments in 2024, the number more than doubled this year, with as many as 13,800 students now registered in the city’s corporation schools. This surge comes as part of a focused initiative led by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to make education more accessible to the city’s children.
Starting from March 1st, the GCC launched a door-to-door admission campaign where teachers directly reached out to parents in a bid to boost school enrollments. This initiative, which continued through the month of April, has paid off, with 13,800 students now enrolled in the corporation schools. Mr. D. Viswanathan, Chairman of the Standing Committee (Education), expressed optimism, hoping the numbers would rise even further, potentially reaching 20,000 by the end of June.
In addition to the increase in enrollments, the GCC has also taken steps to improve the quality of education by appointing physical education teachers at each of the 141 schools. These teachers will be hired on a temporary basis, with middle school educators earning Rs 15,000 per month and higher secondary school teachers earning Rs 18,000 per month. With this strategic focus on both increasing student enrollment and enhancing educational support, Chennai’s corporation schools are poised for significant growth and success in the coming years.
