As Tamil Nadu enters the peak summer phase of Agni Natchathiram, temperatures soar and heatwaves become intense. Doctors and nutritionists strongly advise the public to adopt a cooling diet to stay hydrated and avoid heat-related illnesses.“Summer care starts with what you eat,” says Dr. Deepa Raman, a Chennai-based nutritionist. “During Agni Natchathiram, the body’s core temperature rises. It’s vital to consume foods that cool you down naturally.”
Here are some recommended foods to include in your summer diet:
Water-Rich Fruits:
“Watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, and oranges are excellent choices,” says Dr. Raman. “They not only keep you hydrated but also replenish essential electrolytes.”
Buttermilk and Tender Coconut:
Traditional South Indian drinks like neer mor (spiced buttermilk) and tender coconut water are nature’s energy boosters. “They cool the system and aid digestion,” explains Siddarth Iyer, a diet consultant in Coimbatore.
Sabja (Basil) Seeds:
“Sabja seeds soaked in water and added to milk or lemon juice act as a natural body coolant,” says Iyer. “They’re also good for controlling acidity and body heat.”
Ragi and Nungu (Ice Apple):
“Ragi porridge is a superfood in summer,” says Dr. Raman. “It is light, rich in calcium, and cools the body.”
“Nungu is seasonal and works wonders,” adds Iyer. “It hydrates and has a soothing effect.”
Avoid Heat-Inducing Foods:
“Stay away from oily, fried, spicy, and high-protein-heavy meals during this time,” warns Dr. Raman. “They increase internal heat and can lead to fatigue or indigestion.”
As Agni Natchathiram continues, it’s essential to keep meals light, include plenty of seasonal produce, and drink water at regular intervals. “Your plate should reflect the weather—fresh, light, and cooling,” says Dr. Raman.
Stay cool, stay safe. Let your food be your first shield against the summer sun.
