In a significant shift, more parents in Tamil Nadu are now choosing government schools over private institutions for their children’s education. This trend has been highlighted by the latest enrolment figures released by the Directorate of Primary Education.As of June 2025, over 3.12 lakh students have enrolled in government schools across the state. The total number of government schools in Tamil Nadu stands at around 32,000, and enrolment drives are conducted annually from March onward. This year, the enrolment numbers have crossed a remarkable milestone, showcasing increased public confidence in government-run educational institutions.
Breaking down the figures:
22,757 children have enrolled in LKG classes.
1,72,676 children have enrolled in Class 1 (Tamil medium).
52,057 children have joined Class 1 (English medium).
65,391 children have enrolled in Classes 2 to 8.
District-wise, Chennai leads with 17,985 new enrolments in government schools, followed by Chengalpattu (9,528), Tiruppur (9,285), Salem (8,573), and Tenkasi (8,019). At the other end of the spectrum, Oddanchatram recorded the lowest enrolment with 2,013 students.
These numbers suggest a growing trust in the quality of education offered by government schools, indicating that state-run institutions are now on par with private schools in terms of academic standards and public perception.
