CPI leader R Mutharasan has condemned the use of Lord Murugan’s devotion for political ends, calling it an ominous trend. He raised concerns over the Hindu Munnani’s upcoming Murugan Devotees’ Conference in Madurai, warning that the event is veering away from genuine spiritual traditions and becoming a political stunt .Mutharasan emphasized that Lord Murugan holds deep religious and cultural value for Tamils, especially during sacred festivals like Thaipusam and Panguni Uthiram. He argued that temple administrations and volunteers have traditionally handled pilgrimages with devotion—not politics. The CPI leader accused organizers of exploiting faith, drawing parallels to divisive religious politics seen elsewhere in India
He also recalled the Hindu Munnani’s origins under RSS influence in the 1980s and accused it of promoting a divisive agenda. Mutharasan urged Tamil Nadu citizens to reject this politicisation of Murugan devotion and uphold the state’s secular, inclusive heritage
