In a move to promote better health and focus among students, the Tamil Nadu government has introduced a ‘Water Bell’ system in all government and aided schools across the state.
Under this initiative, special bells will ring at specific times during the school day—likely around 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM—reminding students to take short water breaks. The aim is to ensure students stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months, without disturbing regular academic activities.
The School Education Department has instructed teachers to create awareness about the importance of drinking water, particularly during morning assemblies. Students are also encouraged to bring their own water bottles to school, filled or empty, as they will be allowed to refill them during the day.
Director of School Education S. Kannappan has directed headmasters to provide access to clean drinking water and supervise student participation in the hydration breaks. Chief Educational Officers have been asked to ensure the scheme is effectively implemented.
The government highlighted that staying hydrated helps improve students’ memory, concentration, mood, and overall well-being. It also prevents health issues such as headaches and fatigue.
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said the ‘Water Bell’ system is being launched as part of the state’s commitment to student welfare, similar to the existing breakfast scheme. A formal circular will be issued soon for full implementation in all schools.
The initiative is modeled after similar successful programs in other states and is expected to create a healthy and supportive learning environment for children.
