Peer pressure is emerging as a significant challenge among school-going children in Chennai, with increasing instances of students succumbing to unhealthy influences from their peers. From early exposure to gadgets, brand consciousness, to risky online trends, children are facing pressure to fit in—often at the cost of their individuality, values, and well-being.Psychologists in the city observe that peer influence, once common only in teenage years, is now seen even among pre-teens. “We’re seeing 9- and 10-year-olds anxious about owning the latest phone or wearing branded shoes just because their classmates do,” said Dr. Meenakshi Narayanan, a child psychologist based in Anna Nagar. “The fear of exclusion and the desire to be accepted often push them to adopt behaviors that may not align with what they’ve been taught at home.”
Parents too are alarmed. Priya K., a parent from Velachery, shared, “My son came back home saying he felt left out because he didn’t have a smartwatch like his friends. These pressures are subtle but powerful, and they’re becoming more frequent than before.”
Schools across Chennai are beginning to respond with sensitization programs. “We conduct regular sessions on emotional intelligence and assertiveness,” said S. Rajalakshmi, Principal of a CBSE school in T. Nagar. “We encourage children to think independently and respect differences rather than follow the herd blindly.”
Experts emphasize that communication at home is crucial. “Parents need to be open and non-judgmental when their children express insecurity due to peer comparison,” said Dr. Meenakshi. “It’s not about blaming the child or the peer group, but about helping them develop self-worth.”
With Chennai being an urban melting pot of cultures and aspirations, the pressure to conform—academically, socially, or materially—is palpable. “We should teach our children to stand tall, not blend in,” said Rajalakshmi. “Peer pressure is real, but with the right tools, children can learn to handle it with confidence.”
As the city continues to modernize rapidly, experts say it’s essential to balance exposure with awareness—empowering children to make choices not from pressure, but from clarity.
