Under the National STOP Diarrhoea Campaign (2024), efforts are underway to expand the use of ORS and zinc for children under five. Dr. Harish V.S., Consultant Paediatrics, Apollo Cradle, Chennai, says, “ORS is not a medicine to stop diarrhoea but a scientifically proven way to replace lost fluids and salts.”He warns, “Children lose water and electrolytes faster than adults. Signs like dry mouth, sunken eyes, lethargy, or reduced urine output require immediate attention.”
Dr. Harish V.S. advises:
Use only approved ORS sachets.
Mix in 1 litre of boiled and cooled water.
Give small, frequent doses after each loose motion: 50–100 ml for infants, 100–200 ml for older children.
Continue breastfeeding or normal food.
Discard unused ORS after 24 hours.
“Do not give homemade sugar-salt solutions, carbonated drinks, or juices,” he adds. “Seek a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, has blood, or is accompanied by vomiting.”
“ORS saves lives and prevents dehydration complications,” says Dr. Harish V.S. “Combined with proper care, it ensures faster recovery for children.”
