The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) plans to bring back 20 double-decker buses to Chennai’s roads, marking the return of an iconic mode of transport last seen in the city nearly two decades ago, Transport Minister S. Sivasankar announced.Once a familiar sight in the 1970s through the early 2000s, double-decker buses were discontinued in 2008 due to high maintenance costs and traffic challenges. These vehicles were particularly popular on the Tambaram–Broadway route and drew significant interest from both commuters and tourists during their heyday.
According to the minister, the city’s transport department has floated tenders to procure 20 modern double-decker buses, which are expected to be introduced by the end of this month. The move is part of broader efforts to enhance public transport and attract tourists, especially younger riders, by combining nostalgia with contemporary travel needs.
Officials said the revived double-decker service will help offer comfortable, high-capacity travel and may operate on key routes that can safely accommodate taller vehicles. The initiative also reflects Chennai’s ongoing push to upgrade its bus fleet and improve commuting experiences across the city.
