The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to open its first-ever boating facilities at Madhavaram and Manali lakes on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in the city’s efforts to rejuvenate its water bodies and expand public recreation options. The launch follows successful trial runs conducted on Saturday, officials said. The twin lakes, located on either side of Kamarajar Salai in Manali, have been developed in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) as part of a ₹63-crore lake restoration project aimed at boosting tourism and improving quality of life for residents.
Manali Lake, spread across 29 acres, will feature 13 boats and jet skis, while the larger 66-acre Madhavaram Lake will offer 16 boats for visitors. Both lakes have been upgraded with comprehensive amenities, including ticket counters, snack bars, first-aid rooms, children’s play areas, landscaped parks, seating areas, walkways, lighting, handrails, and toilet facilities.
As part of the development, a 1.8-km walking track is being created around Manali Lake, while an 800-metre footpath with dedicated play areas has been laid at Madhavaram Lake. The project also includes sapling plantations along the lake bunds and the introduction of scientific erosion-control measures to ensure long-term sustainability.
GCC Manali Zone Chairperson A.V. Arumugam said the initiative would benefit more than 1.30 lakh residents in the zone, transforming the lakes from long-neglected spaces into vibrant recreational hubs for families, walkers and tourists.
Officials said the boating facilities are expected to attract visitors from across the city, offering Chennai residents a new leisure destination while reinforcing the importance of protecting and revitalising urban water bodies.
