Political chatter intensified in Tamil Nadu on Thursday with renewed speculation about a possible electoral alliance between the Congress party and actor‑turned‑politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The talk was sparked by remarks from Vijay’s father, S.A. Chandrasekhar, who publicly suggested that the Congress could “regain its old glory” in the state by joining forces with the TVK.Speaking to reporters in Tiruvarur, Chandrasekhar said the TVK was considering offering support to the Congress and urged the national party to seize the opportunity as a way to revitalise its political standing in Tamil Nadu, where it has struggled to maintain a strong presence. He pointed to Congress’ historical legacy and argued that a tie‑up with TVK, which he said commanded strong youth support, could boost both outfits’ prospects.
However, the Congress leadership swiftly downplayed the proposal. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief K. Selvaperunthagai dismissed the idea that his party needed a “boost” from Vijay, quipping that party leader Rahul Gandhi was already providing the impetus needed for its campaign. Despite the dismissal, some political analysts say a Congress‑TVK alliance cannot be fully ruled out, especially amid ongoing seat‑sharing disagreements with the DMK — Congress’ current ally — as election negotiations continue.
As parties finalise strategies in the run‑up to polls expected in April, the suggestion of an unconventional partnership highlights the fluid dynamics of Tamil Nadu politics and the expanding role of alternative players like the TVK under Vijay’s leadership.
