Chennai, Mar 31:
In a major step toward futuristic urban mobility, Chennai Metro Rail Limited is planning to introduce an innovative transport concept inspired by Japan, where metro trains can directly enter buildings.
The move is expected to transform the way commuters access public transport in the city.
This cutting-edge design, already implemented in parts of Japan, allows metro lines to seamlessly integrate with commercial complexes and residential structures.
Instead of traditional standalone stations, passengers will be able to board or exit trains from within buildings, significantly improving convenience and reducing last-mile connectivity challenges.
Officials indicate that the project is progressing rapidly as part of Chennai’s broader vision to upgrade its urban infrastructure to global standards. The integration of metro systems with buildings is also expected to optimize space usage in densely populated areas while enhancing commuter experience.
Urban planners believe such a system could ease congestion, reduce travel time, and encourage greater use of public transport. By bringing metro access closer to workplaces and homes, the initiative aims to make daily commuting more efficient and comfortable.
If implemented successfully, this Japan-inspired model could position Chennai among the few cities in India to adopt such advanced transit solutions, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in modern urban development.
