Chennai, Mar 31:
Women’s representation has emerged as a significant theme in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, with major political parties fielding a notable number of women candidates across constituencies, reflecting a gradual shift toward inclusive political participation.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), contesting in 164 constituencies, has fielded 18 women candidates. While the number remains modest, party leaders have indicated a continued commitment to increasing women’s participation in governance and electoral politics.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), contesting in 167 constituencies, has nominated 20 women candidates. The party has maintained a slightly higher representation compared to DMK, aiming to balance experience with gender inclusion in its candidate selection.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), contesting all 234 constituencies in its electoral debut, has fielded 23 women candidates. Notably, 8 of these women candidates are contesting from reserved constituencies, highlighting the party’s attempt to ensure representation across diverse social segments.
Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) continues to stand out with its consistent commitment to gender parity. Adhering to its 50 percent representation policy, the party has fielded 117 women candidates, the highest among all parties, reinforcing its long-standing stance on equal political representation.
Political observers note that while the overall percentage of women candidates across major parties is still evolving, the increasing numbers indicate a growing recognition of the need for gender diversity in legislative bodies.
As the election campaign progresses, the performance of these women candidates will be closely watched, not only for electoral outcomes but also for what it signifies about the changing dynamics of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
