Chennai, Apr 20:
Postal voting for all 16 Assembly constituencies in Chennai district has been successfully completed, marking a crucial milestone in the run-up to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election 2026. Officials confirmed that the process concluded smoothly on Sunday evening, paving the way for the main polling scheduled on April 23.
As part of the election preparations, authorities have established 4,085 polling stations across the district to facilitate seamless voting. The Election Commission has also ensured inclusive participation by making special arrangements for vulnerable groups, particularly senior citizens aged above 85 and persons with disabilities.
Door-to-door postal voting was carried out for these categories, covering a total of 8,947 voters. Beginning April 16, as many as 96 dedicated teams were deployed across Chennai to collect votes from eligible individuals at their residences, ensuring accessibility and convenience.
In parallel, postal voting arrangements were also made for government officials and police personnel engaged in election duties. This phase commenced on April 18 and was conducted at designated centers across the city to accommodate those unable to vote on polling day due to official responsibilities.
According to official data, 5,151 voters from Chennai—including police personnel, revenue department staff, and election officials—cast their votes through the postal ballot system.
Additionally, 17,097 voters from other districts also exercised their franchise via postal voting, taking the total number of postal votes recorded to 22,248.
Authorities described the completion of postal voting as a significant step in ensuring a smooth and inclusive electoral process.
With logistical arrangements firmly in place, the focus now shifts to the main polling day, where voters across Chennai are expected to participate in large numbers.
