Chennai, May 7:
Senior AIADMK leader Semmalai’s assertion that Edappadi K. Palaniswami is “not a kingmaker, but the king” has gained major political significance amid intense speculation over possible post-poll realignments in Tamil Nadu.
The statement comes against the backdrop of rumours circulating since Wednesday night that the DMK and AIADMK could explore an unexpected understanding or alliance to stake claim to form the government in the event of prolonged uncertainty over majority numbers.
With no party crossing the majority mark in the Assembly election, Tamil Nadu’s political atmosphere has turned fluid, with backchannel discussions and arithmetic dominating the conversation.
While TVK leader Vijay has been attempting to gather support to reach the crucial 118-seat mark, speculation has simultaneously intensified over whether rival Dravidian forces could consider tactical cooperation to prevent a new political force from assuming power.
It is in this context that Semmalai’s remarks are being closely interpreted. By declaring that EPS is “the king” and not merely a “kingmaker,” the AIADMK veteran appeared to signal that the party still sees itself as a central force capable of determining the state’s political direction rather than playing a supporting role.
The developments coincided with Vijay’s second meeting in two days with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Raj Bhavan. The nearly 40-minute meeting reportedly focused on government formation efforts, with Vijay seeking additional time to consolidate support and present majority numbers.
Notably, no invitation to form the government was extended after Vijay’s first meeting with the Governor on Wednesday, further adding to the uncertainty. Following Thursday’s discussions, Vijay is understood to have met his legal team and advisors to explore constitutional and political options amid the evolving situation.
As rumours of shifting alliances continue to swirl, political observers believe the coming days could witness one of the most unpredictable phases in recent Tamil Nadu political history, with every statement and every meeting now carrying larger implications
