NEW DELHI:

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections crossed the ₹2 lakh crore mark for the third time in the current financial year, rising 14.7% year-on-year to ₹2.04 lakh crore in September 2026, according to government data.

Gross GST collections stood at ₹2,03,521 crore in September, compared with ₹1,77,365 crore in the same month last year. The collections relate to transactions undertaken in August.

The September growth was driven particularly by import-linked GST revenue, which jumped 25.9% to ₹65,525 crore from ₹52,031 crore a year earlier. GST revenue from domestic transactions rose 10.1% to ₹1,37,996 crore.

The September collections comprised ₹37,762 crore in Central GST, ₹45,363 crore in State GST and around ₹1.20 lakh crore in Integrated GST.

After adjusting for refunds, net GST revenue rose 18.1% to ₹1.77 lakh crore from ₹1.50 lakh crore in September 2025. Total refunds during the month stood at ₹27,001 crore, down 3% from a year earlier.

GST collections had earlier crossed the ₹2 lakh crore mark in April and July. April recorded around ₹2.43 lakh crore, while July collections were over ₹2.11 lakh crore.

During the first half of the financial year, from April to September 2026, gross GST collections increased 11.6% to ₹12.46 lakh crore from ₹11.17 lakh crore in the corresponding period of 2025-26. Net collections rose 10.4% to ₹10.66 lakh crore.

Tax experts, however, noted that the much faster growth in import-linked GST compared with domestic collections would need to be watched. Import GST grew 25.9%, against 10.1% growth in domestic GST revenue in September.
