Chennai, Jan 26: Commuters using R.K. Salai, Tirumayilai, and Mandaveli in Chennai, where Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) are in operation, have been facing diversions affecting their daily travel. These diversions, implemented since January 7, 2024, have raised concerns among road users about abandoned vehicles, encroachments on diversion roads, and the need for improved traffic management.
In response to these concerns, CMRL is actively collaborating with the Greater Chennai Corporation and the Police to address issues such as the removal of abandoned vehicles and encroachments at diversion sites. To enhance traffic management, additional Traffic Marshalls will be deployed at all junctions and diversion points in collaboration with Traffic Police.
Acknowledging the impact on commuters, CMRL is working closely with Traffic Police to increase personnel deployment, ensuring efficient enforcement of one-way traffic and minimizing disruptions. Discussions are also underway with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to explore the possibility of introducing Mini buses to alleviate public inconvenience during this period of diversions.
To address the wear and tear caused by diversions, CMRL has initiated road repair works. The ongoing road repair activities aim to ensure the good condition of roads affected by the diversions and are expected to conclude within a week.
As part of a comprehensive strategy, CMRL is committed to keeping commuters informed about ongoing developments and encouraging them to plan their routes accordingly.
