Chennai:
Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram on Thursday urged critics and the media to grant the newly formed TVK government sufficient time to stabilise, highlighting the significant administrative challenges faced by a first-time dispensation led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
Addressing reporters, Chidambaram pointed out that a large section of the government lacks prior legislative experience. “They have just come to power. Out of them, 31 ministers have no prior experience inside the Assembly, and 101 MLAs are first-timers. We must give them time,” he said, stressing that a grace period of three to six months is essential for ministers to understand their portfolios and governance responsibilities.
Defending the Congress party’s support to the government, he said the administration’s commitment to secularism and protection of state rights aligns with the party’s core ideology. He added that allies such as the CPI, CPM, VCK and IUML extended support to ensure political stability. Withholding support, he warned, could have led to a fresh election or even President’s Rule, which he described as an undesirable outcome.
